The story behind the tattoo

By: Jake, Sun Sep 28th, 2008

Tattoos have been a part of culture for thousands of years. So much has been written in history about what tattoos mean, the symbolism to the culture that created them or the symbolism of the actual art, whether it be a lion or tiger and what that image represents. What of the story behind the tattoo? Tattoos today have become more popular than ever before, and whether people are getting the tattoo to represent something, or someone, or just to look really good, there is a story to tell about the tattoo and the meaning of that tattoo to the wearer. Two people may have a similar looking tattoo but the meaning of what that tattoo means to each person would be completely different. Tattoos are art, but are very much different to normal art. Art is where the artist creates something that exists in their mind and presents it to the world as an object, the world sees this art either as a painting, a sculpture or something similar and the buyer of the art is buying what the artist is representing, the meaning of the art is with the artist. Tattoos are mostly opposite to this, the art exists in the wearer s mind. The person will design and create great works of art they want represented on their body, the skills of the tattooist create this art on the person’s skin and the art can never be lost or stolen, this art will exist with that person until death. Once again, what does the tattoo mean to the creator, YOU? I know a lot of tattooed people and every time I ask them what their tattoo means I can guarantee I will get a story, I have never met anyone that cannot tell a story of a tattoo they have, even if it is a story of the drunken night they had and then waking up in the morning with a new tattoo they can’t remember even getting. Tattoos are art, people spend thousands of dollars on art work just to hang it up in a room or lock it away for safe keeping, I have chosen to wear my art for all to see and I will always know where it is. So what is the story behind your tattoo? Read what others have written and what their tattoo means to them at Talking Tattoos (www.talkingtattoos.com), and while you’re there tell us what your tattoo means.
